The Heart of Central Europe

Why Hungary

Located in the heart of Central Europe, Hungary is a country with a rich history, a unique cultural identity, and a strategic location that has made it a crossroads of trade and culture for centuries. The country is known for its beautiful capital, Budapest, which is often called the “Pearl of the Danube,” as well as its thermal baths, vibrant folk traditions, and world-class cuisine. The Hungarian language is unique in Europe, and the country’s cultural heritage is a blend of Eastern and Western influences. As a member of the European Union and the Schengen Area, Hungary is fully integrated into the European economy and offers a stable and business-friendly environment for investors. Its skilled workforce, well-developed infrastructure, and government incentives have made it a popular destination for foreign investment, particularly in the manufacturing and services sectors.

Key advantages of BPOs in Hungary include:

Strategic location in the heart of Central Europe.
Member of the European Union and the Schengen Area.
Stable and business-friendly environment.
Skilled and cost-effective workforce.
Well-developed infrastructure and excellent connectivity.
Strong manufacturing base, particularly in the automotive and electronics sectors.
Growing shared services and BPO sector.
Government incentives for foreign investment.
Rich cultural heritage and high quality of life.
Gateway to both Western and Eastern European markets.

Population and language

Just under 9.6 million people live nationally, with more than 72 percent based in urban areas. Budapest alone accounts for over 1.7 million residents and the largest concentration of working-age professionals. Hungarian is the official language and is linguistically distinct within Europe, while English proficiency ranks among the strongest in Central and Eastern Europe, particularly among under-40s and graduates. German remains widely used across enterprise services, engineering management and tourism operations. National literacy exceeds 99 percent. The median age is 43.9, indicating gradual demographic ageing, balanced through sustained labour mobility within the European Union. Workforce participation exceeds 74 percent. EU membership, Schengen access and long-term economic integration provide stable population access and labour continuity for international BPO and shared services employers.

Education and workforce

More than 60 higher education institutions operate nationally, producing approximately 53,000 graduates per year. Around 28 percent complete STEM degrees, with consistently strong output in computer science, software engineering, electrical engineering, biomedical engineering and applied mathematics. Budapest University of Technology, Eötvös Loránd University and the University of Debrecen lead national technical education and research output. Dual vocational training programmes deliver applied skills across automation, robotics, cloud infrastructure and network engineering. Total employment stands at approximately 4.9 million people. Over 400,000 individuals work across tourism, hospitality, retail, aviation and front-line services, supplying transferable customer engagement and language skills into BPO delivery. Graduate unemployment remains below the EU average. Wage costs remain competitive relative to Western Europe while retaining full EU employment protection and accreditation standards.

Transport and infrastructure

Urban mobility is centred on Budapest’s integrated metro, tram and suburban rail system, carrying more than 1.6 million passengers each day. Four metro lines are supported by over 150 km of tram routes, extensive bus corridors and expanding park-and-ride infrastructure serving outer districts. The M1, M3, M5 and M7 motorways connect directly into Austria, Slovakia, Croatia and the Balkans. Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (IATA: BUD, ICAO: LHBP) handled over 14.8 million passengers in 2023 and is undergoing terminal expansion, airside logistics upgrades and cargo development. Intercity rail modernisation continues under EU TEN-T funding through 2027. These systems provide predictable workforce commuting, high-density office clustering and continuous executive mobility for BPO, shared services and enterprise operations.

Telecommunications and connectivity

National digital infrastructure ranks among the strongest in Central Europe. Fibre broadband coverage exceeds 90 percent of households, while 5G mobile services operate nationwide across all major cities and industrial corridors. Mobile penetration exceeds 120 percent of the population. Multiple Tier III carrier-neutral data centres operate within Budapest, supporting fintech processing, enterprise cloud hosting, ERP platforms and disaster recovery services. International fibre routing is fully redundant through Austria, Germany and Slovakia. Public-sector digitalisation includes nationwide e-government, digital identity and e-health platforms. Cybersecurity and data handling align with EU NIS and GDPR regulation. Cloud adoption across finance, healthcare and shared services continues to accelerate. These conditions support real-time financial processing, secure multilingual contact routing and distributed enterprise IT operations for international BPO providers.

Government support and growth

The national corporate tax rate stands at nine percent, the lowest in the European Union. The Hungarian Investment Promotion Agency administers direct investment grants, payroll subsidies, training support and R&D tax credits for strategic sectors. Priority industries include automotive electronics, batteries, medical devices, fintech, software development and shared services. EU structural funding continues to finance STEM research programmes, SME digitalisation and reskilling initiatives. Export licensing, VAT reclaims and company formation operate through fully digital platforms. Trade policy maintains full EU market access while the Eastern Opening strategy supports Asian investment inflows. Energy stability frameworks and long-term industrial planning provide predictable operating conditions. These regulatory, fiscal and trade systems underpin long-term stability for international outsourcing, technology services and shared services investments across European markets.

BPO services

More than 150 shared services and BPO centres operate nationally, employing over 75,000 professionals. Core delivery spans finance and accounting, HR services, cybersecurity operations, IT service desk, supply chain coordination, compliance processing and multilingual customer support. Budapest is the primary delivery hub, supported by growing centres in Debrecen, Szeged, Pécs and Miskolc. Language coverage includes English, German, French, Italian, Spanish and Nordic languages. Automation adoption is high across RPA, ERP administration and cloud service management. All operations run within EU financial and data protection frameworks. Wage inflation remains moderated relative to Western Europe while productivity is high. Nearshore enterprise clients utilise these platforms for pan-European shared services consolidation and regulated process outsourcing deployments.
